Like many ragdoll breeders you may speak to, we first fell in love with the ragdoll after a segment on Burke’s Backyard in the late 90’s. Although I was a dog person and didn’t really like cats, the ragdoll fascinated me. This was a cat that acted much like a dog. They looked like big fluffy teddy bears that you could more or less do anything with or take anywhere. Sounded too good to be true, I always saw cats as being a bit of a decorative feature and not a truly interactive pet.

In mid 2005 Dan finally persuaded me to get a cat to keep our lop bunny Flash company. I insisted if we got a cat it had to be a ragdoll. I then declared it specifically had to be a blue point. Well got on a waiting list and when bubs were born in there were no blue points in the litter. My least favourite was a bicolour so I knew I could be a little bit flexible, but I didn’t want one of those. I learnt the hard way that often the cat will pick their owner, which is what happened with Hol. A blue cream tortie tabby bicolour stole our hearts, and Flash’s (yes he helped us choose!). When Flash died Holly was heartbroken, she constantly cried and searched for him and it became obvious she needed a companion with 4 legs. Time to convince Dan to let me have that blue point!!

Again we went on a waiting list and a litter of seal kittens was born. I told myself that was ok, at least it wasn’t red, my least favourite colour. You guessed it, we went to Jacqui’s house and fell in love with a red boy from an older litter that Jac was going to keep. He even turned out to be a bicolour! How could this happen? Simple, raggies are more than just a colour and pattern, they are little 4 legged people with unique personalities.

I did end up getting that dream blue point, a gift from a dear friend who started us on our breeding journey which we now love so much. By this stage Dan was totally hooked and didn’t take much convincing to add another raggy to the family. Breeding seemed like the logical next step. There is no greater honour than being able to give someone the joy of taking home a beautiful raggy baby. We keep our cattery small to allow us to spend as much time with our cats as possible. Our kittens are raised as part of our family, one litter at a time, to ensure healthy happy socialised kittens. Most of the time we cope well with sending the bubs off to their new families, but a certain boy stole our heart. We kept him and named him Puddles. You can read about him on his page.
